Michael René Rodriguez was born on the 31st of December, 1957 in New York City. He grew up in Washington Heights, sang in the church choir at the Broadway Methodist Temple, and attended the Bronx High School of Science.
His family was from Puerto Rico. His father, William, was from Ponce, and he fathered twelve children. Michael’s mother, Melquiades, was from a small mountain village, Moca, where he would spend time as a child on the family farm.
Lucrecia, his grandmother, and the other women in the family would tell stories about the Taino Indians that lived there on the island a long time ago, and how it was in their bloodline. Everywhere he travels, he searches for the remnants of the past inhabitants, left behind for the new souls that follow in their footsteps. He enjoys visiting gardens and cemeteries for clues.
